Bentonite Clay is the hero ingredient of our Organic Teethpaste (toothpaste) because it helps clean, remineralise, strengthen and whiten teeth and gums naturally, supporting the long-term health of the mouth.
What is Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite Clay is formed from volcanic ash that has been trapped in seabeds for eons.
When magma is thrown up into the atmosphere, it rapidly cools, becoming volcanic ash. The volcanic ash then falls, settles and accumulates in layers on the seafloor, where it becomes compacted. Over time, seawater seeps through the ash layers. Eventually, from these aged sedimentary volcanic ash beds, bentonite clay is harvested.
Named after Fort Benton in Wyoming, USA, where many volcanoes are found, bentonite clay may also be referred to as Montmorillonite Clay for Montmorillonin France where it was first discovered. The bentonite clay used in our Teethpaste is harvested in Australia, is an Australian Certified Organic Input and is compliant with FSANZ food grade standards. Much like volcanic soil, bentonite clay can contain up to 75 naturally-occurring trace minerals including calcium, silica, magnesium, sodium, iron and potassium.
HOW TO USE BENTONITE CLAY TOPICALLY
Bentonite Clay For Cleaning Teeth
You may have noticed that your mouth feels especially clean after using We Love Organics Organic Teethpaste, and that’s because it is!
A truly exceptional detoxifying agent, bentonite clay carries a powerful negative charge, which seeks and binds to positively charged bacteria, toxins, impurities and heavy metals. By binding these toxins to itself, the bentonite clay in Teethpaste helps detoxify your mouth of unwanted microbes. This process is called adsorption.
But bentonite clay is also known for its swelling capacity – it’s absorptive properties. Like a sponge, it will expand to absorb these positively-charged toxins into itself. Furthermore, bentonite clay is alkalising and thus can help balance the pH of the mouth, creating an oral environment that unwanted bacteria cannot survive in, helping to give you fresher, cleaner breath.
Bentonite Clay for Remineralisation
Remineralisation refers to the way minerals are fed to the living teeth and gums to support their optimal health and regeneration.
Remineralisation is a natural bodily process activated by the hypothalamus, which regulates the parotid gland, your main salivary gland. Unfortunately, factors such as lifestyle choices and diet, can cause minerals to be pulled from teeth (demineralisation), rather than supplied to them (remineralisation).
Teethpaste has been formulated to help support the correct conditions for remineralisation to occur. Naturally mineral-rich bentonite clay plays a key role in how Teethpaste can help support remineralisation.
Teethpaste can help remineralise teeth and gums in two primary ways. Firstly, Teethpaste helps cleanse and detoxify your mouth, which helps remove any barriers, biofilms and pathogens from the mouth that may otherwise inhibit remineralisation via the saliva. Secondly, Teethpaste helps to alkalise the mouth, balancing the oral microbiome, which in turn helps support the correct conditions for healthy saliva production, a prerequisite to the remineralisation process.
Bentonite Clay for Whitening Teeth
Bentonite clay gently polishes enamel while absorbing plaque, thus helping brighten teeth overtime. Because enamel reflects the overall state of oral health, brushing with bentonite-clay based Teethpaste also helps nurture naturally white teeth by alkalising the mouth and supporting remineralisation.
Bentonite Clay for Strengthening Teeth
By thoroughly cleansing and detoxifying your mouth, nurturing an alkaline oral environment and supporting the prerequisite conditions for remineralisation to occur, brushing with our bentonite-clay Teethpaste may help strengthen teeth and gums.
Thus, in combination with diet and lifestyle choices, our Organic Teethpaste can help improve your oral health naturally.
